DestinationDance
A Site-Specific Dance Tour Through Downtown Reno
What: Destination Dance first premiered in 2015 as part of the 20th anniversary of Artown. This year, the highly-successful dance tour is back with new locations and will surely be just as memorable as ever! Site-specific dance is work that is created in response to a particular place or site, inspired by its architecture, design, history, or current use. Destination Dance will feature the work of local choreographers who have been commissioned to create unique performances juxtaposed against iconic downtown fixtures, taking traditional and contemporary dance off of the stage and into a new environment. Movement, visual imagery, and passion will blend to create an eclectic vision for the community and one that we can hope to apply in perpetuity.
Where: Featuring urban and natural sites located in the Arts District in downtown Reno, this walking-distance dance tour will allow audience members to engage with dance in a whole new way and view some of Reno’s most treasured locations in a new and invigorating light. Utilizing signature monuments in the heart of Reno such as the contemporary Nevada Museum of Art, the newly renovated Renaissance Reno and bocce ball courts, the Washoe County Library, and the historical Old Post Office, Destination Dance will celebrate our city’s unique sense of place through movement.
Who: Eve Allen Garza, dancer and choreographer in Reno, NV, is the director of the Downtown Dance Collective. Eve received her M.F.A. in Ballet from the University of Utah and B.S. in Business Administration with a Dance minor from the University of Nevada, Reno. Alongside local choreographers Cari K. Cunningham, Jennie Pitts Knipe, Kris Swaczyna, and L. Martina Young, they will create new works that reshape the conventional notions of performance. Tour guides will be equipped able to discuss the history behind the various sites and the inspiration behind each artist’s choreographic decisions.
When: Thursday, July 12, 2018 with tour groups departing from the Reno City Plaza at 6:00pm, 6:20pm, 6:40pm, and 7:00pm. The tour route will be approximately 1 mile and will take one hour to complete. The event is open to the public, and people will be welcome to join the tour for as many stops as they choose.
